Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

This Air Fryer Grilled Cheese recipe uses thick Texas toast buttered on the outside and layered with good melting cheese to create a golden, crunchy crust with gooey melted cheese inside. Cooking in the air fryer crisps the bread evenly without excess butter and cooks the sandwiches quickly by flipping them halfway through. The method allows for easy, hands-off preparation of toasted sandwiches with a rich texture from the buttery exterior and a smooth, melted center.

Description

Air Fryer Grilled Cheese sandwiches are prepared using thick, hearty slices of Texas toast or similar bread. One side of each bread slice is buttered before assembling with cheese inside and cooking with buttered sides out. The sandwiches are air fried at 350°F, flipped once during cooking to ensure even browning and melting. This method produces a toasted exterior that is crisp but not greasy, and cheese that melts fully inside.

The texture contrasts the crunchy, buttery crust with a creamy and stretchy melted cheese interior. Different cheese types such as American, Swiss, or Cheddar that melt well can be used. The thickness of the bread plays a role in yielding a tender inside crumb with a browned crust.

This sandwich is convenient as the air fryer cooks quickly without the need for extra butter beyond a light coating, preserving crispiness and controlling greasiness. It suits quick meals or snacks and can be made one or two sandwiches at a time depending on air fryer capacity. Monitoring cook time is important since bread type and cheese quantity affect browning and melting.

The instructions note the importance of spacing the sandwiches evenly without overlap so hot air circulates all around. Sandwiches can be checked before end of cooking time to avoid overcooking or burning.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 lices Texas toast or any thick, hearty bread
  • 2 Tbsp butter softened
  • 4 lices cheese good melting like American, Swiss, Cheddar etc.

Instructions

  1. Butter one side of each piece of bread. Lay a piece of cheese on the unbuttered side of one slice of bread top with another slice of bread, butter side out. Repeat for a second sandwich.
  2. Place sandwiches in an Air Fryer basket making sure they aren’t overlapping, depending on your Air Fryer size you might have to do one at a time. Cook at 350 degrees for about 4-5 minutes and flip the sandwich. Cook for an additional 4-5 minutes or until the outside of the sandwich is golden brown and the cheese is melted inside. Different types of bread will cook at different rates so make sure to check it!

Notes

  • Use a sturdy sandwich bread like Texas toast or similar thick slices for best results.
  • Apply softened butter sparingly to achieve a crispy crust without excess greasiness.
  • Arrange sandwiches in the air fryer in a single layer without overlapping to ensure even cooking.
  • Check sandwiches early during cooking to prevent overcooking, as bread thickness and cheese amount influence cooking time.
