Air Fryer Halibut Recipe with Lemon Butter Sauce
Description
The recipe involves lightly oiling halibut fillets and seasoning with kosher salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika before air frying at 350°F for 5-7 minutes, depending on thickness. There is no need to flip the fish during cooking. The fish is done when it flakes easily with a fork and reaches an internal temperature of about 130-135ºF. The lemon butter sauce is prepared separately by heating butter with minced garlic until fragrant, then adding fresh lemon juice.
The air fryer setup allows quick cooking with minimal added fat, and the smoked paprika adds a subtle smoky note to the delicate halibut. The lemon butter sauce brightens the fish with its tang and richness. This dish pairs well with vegetables or fries, making it versatile for weeknight meals.
Additional notes include options to use different white fish or spice blends for variation, tips for cooking frozen fish, and recommendations for reheating leftovers in the air fryer at a lower temperature. The fish can also be baked in the oven as an alternative cooking method.
Ingredients
- 2 ounce halibut fillet fresh preferably, frozen see notes
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- black pepper to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Garnish parsley Lemon zest, lemon juice, chopped
Lemon Butter Sauce (optional)
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 clove garlic minced, or 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice fresh squeezed
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees F. Rinse the halibut and pat dry with paper towels. Lightly brush or spray with olive oil, may do tops and bottoms, I just did the top.
- Sprinkle on salt, pepper and smoked paprika, use hands or brush to rub in the spices.
- Carefully place fish in air fryer set for 350 degrees and air fry for 5-7 minutes* depending on the thickness of the filet. There is no need to turn the fish.
- Before you start the fish or while it is air frying, make your lemon butter sauce if desired. Heat butter over medium low heat until foamy, if brown butter is desired, swirl until brown and nutty, then add garlic, stirring one minute until fragrant. Stir in lemon juice and serve.
- Once fish flakes easily with a fork it’s done, remove and serve with a drizzle of lemon butter sauce and your favorite side dish. We enjoyed steak fries, french fries, broccoli, asparagus etc.
Notes
- The fish is done when it flakes easily and reaches an internal temperature of 130-135ºF; thickness affects cooking time.
- Frozen halibut can be cooked directly in the air fryer but may require additional minutes and should be patted dry before seasoning.
- The lemon butter sauce is optional but adds richness and acidity that complements the fish.
- This recipe works with other white fish like haddock, mahi-mahi, or tilapia, and allows substituting paprika with various spice blends for different flavor profiles.
- Leftover fish can be reheated in the air fryer at 320°F for 5-7 minutes to maintain texture.
- In place of air frying, baking in a 400°F oven for 12-13 minutes is a good alternative; broiling briefly can add crispness.
