Air Fryer Home Fries [Oil Free Option]

These Air Fryer Home Fries feature peeled, evenly cut potatoes mixed with thickly diced onion and red pepper, seasoned with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. After soaking and drying the potatoes to enhance crispiness, they are air fried at a high temperature with optional oil until golden and tender. The recipe includes tips for handling vegetables, seasoning variations, and reheating, yielding crispy, flavorful home fries with minimal oil.

Description

The Air Fryer Home Fries recipe begins with peeling and cutting yellow potatoes into half-inch pieces, then soaking and drying them to remove excess starch for a crisper texture. Thickly diced yellow onion and red pepper are added to the potatoes along with sea salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder, and optionally avocado oil for coating. This mixture is cooked in an air fryer basket at 400°F (204°C), shaking or stirring periodically until the potatoes are tender and reach desired crispiness, typically in 15-20 minutes.

Soaking the potatoes before cooking is crucial for achieving a crispy exterior without drying out the inside. The use of thick vegetable pieces prevents burning and falling through the basket. Seasonings can be adjusted with smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, or cayenne depending on preference. The fries are best served fresh while crisp but can be stored refrigerated up to 3-4 days and reheated in the air fryer or toaster oven to retain texture.

The recipe provides practical advice for air fryer use: monitor cooking times based on your model, cut potatoes evenly for uniform cooking, and consider adding vegetables later if you want smaller pieces to prevent burning.

  2. Now add all remaining ingredients to the same bowl and mix well to evenly coat.

Notes

  • Soaking and thoroughly drying potatoes before cooking ensures a crisper home fry texture.
  • Cut potatoes into even half-inch pieces for consistent cooking and optimal crispiness.
  • Keep onion and pepper pieces thick to prevent them from burning or falling through the air fryer basket holes.
  • If smaller diced onion or pepper is preferred, add them halfway through the cooking time to reduce burning risk.
  • Check your air fryer frequently, as cooking times vary by model—adjust as necessary.
  • Experiment with seasonings by substituting smoked paprika and adding spices like chili powder, cumin, or cayenne.
  • Home fries are best enjoyed fresh but can be refrigerated up to 3-4 days and reheated in the air fryer or toaster oven to regain crispness.
