Air Fryer Kale Chips Recipe
Description
The recipe involves removing kale leaves from their ribs, tearing them into bite-sized pieces, then coating them lightly with neutral oil and salt. Cooking in the air fryer at 350°F crisps the kale within 4-5 minutes, with a toss halfway through to promote even cooking. The kale chips shrink as they crisp and require close attention toward the end of cooking to avoid burning.
This method offers a fast way to transform fresh kale into a healthy snack alternative to traditional chips, preserving the kale’s nutrients while adding a pleasant crunch and subtle saltiness. The lightly oiled surface aids in crisping without greasiness.
Once cooked, the chips can be served plain or sprinkled with additional seasonings like Parmesan, chili powder, or lemon juice for variation. They are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in a paper or plastic bag at room temperature for a few days, with reheating in the air fryer restoring some crispness.
Ingredients
- 1 kale rinsed and dried, bunch
- 1 Tbsp. neutral cooking oil olive or avocado, generic cooking oil
- ¼ tsp. salt to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Kale: a 6-quart Air Fryer to 350°F and let it heat up for at least 3 minutes. Remove the ribs from the kale and then tear the leaves of kale into 1-2 inch pieces.
- Season the Kale: Add the kale leaves to a large bowl. Drizzle with oil and then sprinkle with salt. Toss until all of the leaves are evenly coated.
- Air Fry the Kale: Working in two batches, place half of the kale leaves in a single layer in the Air Fryer basket. Cook for 4-5 minutes, tossing the basket halfway through. Keep a close eye on them after the 3 minute mark - they will crisp up really fast after this! Repeat with the remaining kale.
- Serve the Kale Chips: Sprinkle with additional salt or seasonings, to taste, and enjoy!
Notes
- Remove kale leaves from ribs by hand for faster preparation.
- Tear chips slightly larger than desired, as they shrink when air fried.
- Use oil sparingly to avoid soggy chips and maintain crispiness.
- Monitor closely from 3 minutes onward as chips crisp quickly.
- Store chips in brown paper or plastic bag with paper towel at room temperature for up to a week; avoid airtight containers to prevent sogginess.
- Re-crisp chips by reheating in the air fryer at 300°F for 1-2 minutes.
- Season with varieties like Parmesan, chili powder, or lemon juice for different flavors.
