Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Chicken Wings
Description
This recipe starts with raw chicken wings that are dried and tossed with baking powder, lemon pepper seasoning, and optional salt to coat evenly. The baking powder helps dry the skin and enhance crisping. Cooking in the air fryer at 360°F ensures thorough cooking while flipping halfway guarantees even crispness. A final higher temperature blast at 400°F crisps the skin further.
The flavor centers on the lemon pepper seasoning, delivering citrusy and peppery brightness balanced by saltiness. The air fryer method reduces fat compared to deep frying while still producing crispy wing skin and juicy meat inside.
These wings are suitable for snacks, game day, or casual meals. They can be paired with ranch or blue cheese dip and fresh vegetables for balance. They provide a practical alternative to fried wings with concentrated lemon pepper flavor.
The notes describe specific adaptations for frozen wings, including adjusting seasoning timing and cooking duration to accommodate the extra moisture. Using an instant-read thermometer ensures wings reach the safe internal temperature of 165°F.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds chicken wings
- 1 Tablespoon baking powder
- 2 Tablespoons lemon pepper seasoning
- 1 teaspoon salt optional, depending on the salt content of your lemon pepper seasoning
Instructions
- If your chicken wings aren't cut apart cut them into wingettes and drumettes. Discard the wing tips.
- Pat the wings dry with paper towels and put them in a large bowl.
- Add the baking powder to the bowl and toss the wings to mix.
- Add the lemon pepper seasoning and salt (if using) and toss to mix.
- Put the chicken wings in an air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd them. Keep them in a single layer.
- Air fry at 360 degrees F for 18 minutes, flipping them over after 10 minutes.
- After the 18 minutes is up increase the air fryer heat to 400 degrees F and air fry for 6 more minutes.
- Use an instant read thermometer to verify the wings are cooked to 165 degrees F.
Notes
- Do not season frozen wings before cooking; seasoning sticks better applied after initial cooking.
- For frozen wings, cook at 360°F for 26 minutes, flipping after 15 minutes, then add lemon pepper seasoning before final crisping.
- Increase temperature to 400°F for last 6 minutes of cooking to crisp skin.
- Use an instant-read thermometer to confirm wings reach 165°F internal temperature for safety.
