Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks
Description
Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks use string cheese cut in half, dipped first in flour seasoned with salt and pepper, then egg wash, and finally a seasoned breadcrumb and panko mixture that includes garlic powder and vegetable oil. After coating, freezing is essential to solidify the breading for crisp cooking. The air fryer cooks them at 390°F for 5 to 7 minutes, achieving a crunchy exterior while keeping the cheese melted inside. Cooking times may vary by air fryer model, so check for bubbling cheese as a doneness indication.
The simple step of freezing the coated sticks makes a big difference in preventing the cheese from leaking out during cooking. The garlic powder in the coating adds a subtle flavor without overpowering the mozzarella. Serve these immediately for the best texture and gooey cheese center.
For those without an air fryer, baking at 400°F for 9 to 11 minutes is a doable alternative. This recipe balances a flavorful crust and soft, melted cheese inside, offering a satisfying snack involving minimal oil.
Ingredients
- 8 mozzarella cheese strings
- 2 egg
- ½ cup seasoned bread crumbs
- ½ cup panko bread crumbs
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cut mozzarella sticks in half.
- Whisk eggs with 1 tablespoon water. In a separate bowl combine bread crumbs, Panko bread crumbs, vegetable oil, and garlic powder. Place flour in a 3rd bowl and season with salt & pepper.
- Dip each mozzarella stick into the eggs and then into the flour mixture. Dip back into the eggs and finally into the bread crumb mixture.
- Place on a baking sheet and freeze at least 30 minutes (or up to 6 months).
- Preheat air fryer to 390°F.
- Generously spray mozzarella sticks with oil or cooking spray. Place in the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook for 5-7 minutes or until crisp.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- You can bake these mozzarella sticks at 400°F for 9 to 11 minutes if you don’t have an air fryer.
- Freezing the coated sticks before cooking helps keep the crust crispy and prevents the cheese from melting out.
- Preheat your air fryer and watch carefully from 4 minutes to prevent overcooking since air fryer times can vary.
- For store-bought frozen mozzarella sticks, cooking them at 390°F for 5-7 minutes works well.
