Air Fryer Nachos

This Air Fryer Nachos recipe layers seasoned ground beef, cheddar cheese, and tortilla chips cooked together in an air fryer basket lined with foil. The ground beef is cooked with taco seasoning until the liquid reduces, providing a flavorful meat topping that melts nicely with the cheese. The layering technique allows the cheese to melt evenly over the chips and meat, resulting in a satisfying texture balance between crispy chips and melted cheese.

Description

Air Fryer Nachos combine cooked taco-seasoned ground beef with shredded cheddar cheese and tortilla chips, arranged in layers inside a foil-lined air fryer basket. The ground beef is prepared by browning in a pan, draining excess fat, then simmering with taco seasoning and water until flavorful and thick. Layers of chips, cheese, and seasoned meat alternate, making sure the chips don’t overlap excessively to allow even cooking. Cooking in the air fryer melts the cheese and slightly crisps the chips, delivering a convenient way to make nachos with less mess and quicker crisping than a traditional oven.

The seasoned ground beef adds a savory depth, while the cheddar cheese provides creamy richness that binds the layers. The foil liner in the air fryer basket catches any melted cheese or meat juices, simplifying cleanup. This method can be adjusted for multiple layers depending on the air fryer size. It’s a versatile approach where the amount of cheese and meat can be adapted to taste or portion size.

Leftover seasoned meat can be halved or frozen for future use. The recipe notes that the provided measurements are guidelines, allowing for customization. Preparing the meat in advance and freezing it offers convenience for quick nacho preparation later. Overall, the recipe relies on basic ingredients and straightforward layering for a balanced, flavorful snack or casual meal component.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 3 ounces tortilla chips
  • 6 ounces cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Start by heating a pan over medium high heat. Add your ground beef and cook for approximately 3-5 minutes until it is browned.
  2. Remove from the heat and drain off the excess fat. Then return the ground beef to the stove.
  3. Add the taco seasoning and approximately 1/4 cup of water. Stir together and continue cooking until the water reduces and you are left with seasoned ground beef. Approximately 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. See note 1.
  4. Loosely line the bottom of the air fryer basket with aluminum foil. Make sure it comes up the side of the air fryer. This will be the "bowl" you cook your nachos in.
  5. Start with a layer of tortilla chips in the bottom of the air fryer basket. Try not to let them overlap too much.
  6. Next sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese and then finish with some of the seasoned taco meat.
  7. Repeat this layering 1 or two more times. You can make as many layers as you can fit in your air fryer basket. Just make sure the top of your nachos are below the rim of the basket.
  8. Place the air fryer basket in the air fryer and set air fryer to 350 degrees F. Cook for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted.
  9. Carefully remove the nachos from the air fryer and place on a plate (you can leave the foil underneath or gently lift them off of it). Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Notes

  • Only half of the seasoned taco meat is needed per batch; save or freeze the remainder for later use.
  • Cheese and meat quantities can be adjusted based on personal preference and air fryer capacity.
  • Loosely lining the air fryer basket with foil helps contain drips and creates a bowl shape for layering.
