Air Fryer Onion Rings

Air Fryer Onion Rings use thickly sliced large onions coated first in a seasoned flour batter made with sparkling water, paprika, and black pepper, then dipped in a breadcrumb mixture with dried parsley. The coated rings are air fried to a golden, crispy texture without deep frying. This results in a lighter but crunchy onion ring snack or side with well-spiced flavor.

Description

Starting with large onions cut into rounds about half an inch thick, the rings are carefully separated to preserve their shape. A batter of flour mixed with paprika, black pepper, and cold sparkling water forms a light, smooth coating. The rings are dipped into the batter and then thoroughly coated in seasoned breadcrumbs with dried parsley, salt, and pepper.

The air fryer is preheated, and the onion rings are arranged in a single layer with a light spraying or brushing of oil to encourage crisping. Cooked at about 370°F for roughly 10 minutes, the rings become golden and crispy without excess oil absorption. The paprika and black pepper in the batter add subtle warmth, while the parsley in the crumbs offers a fresh herbal note.

The onion rings serve well as a snack or alongside sandwiches or burgers. Cooking in small batches helps maintain even crispness, and monitoring during air frying ensures they are cooked to the desired texture without burning.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 onion large
  • 1 Cup flour
  • 3/4 Cup sparkling water
  • black pepper
  • 1/2 Teaspoon paprika
  • 1 Cup breadcrumbs
  • parsley dried

Instructions

  1. Strip the onions of their outermost states and cut them into at least half an inch thick rounds.
  2. Pull the rings apart from each other by applying gentle pressure while avoiding breaking them.
  3. Next, prepare the batter. Put the flour, paprika, and black pepper in a small bowl and mix well.Pour cold sparkling water in a trickle, and with a whisk, mix well until a smooth batter forms.
  4. In a second bowl, pour the breadcrumbs and season with salt, pepper, and dried parsley.
  5. Dip the rings first in the batter, helping with tongs or a fork, then in the breadcrumb mixture. Make sure to cover the entire onion ring with the breadcrumbs.
  6. Continue in this way until all the rings are finished.
  7. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F for 2 minutes. Using some spray oil or a kitchen brush, spray or brush the base of the air fryer basket, and place the onion rings in a single layer, being careful not to overlap them.
  8. Cook in the air fryer at 370°F (190°C) for 10 minutes or until your preferred golden brown.
  9. Serve this crunchy onion rings hot with a sprinkle of salt and your favorite sauce.

Notes

  • You can substitute paprika with other preferred spices to vary the seasoning.
  • Use cooking spray or a kitchen brush to evenly apply oil for better crisping in the air fryer.
  • Prepare onion rings in small batches to avoid overcrowding and ensure even cooking.
  • Different air fryer models cook unevenly; check progress during cooking to prevent overcooking or burning.
