Air Fryer Onion Rings

Air Fryer Onion Rings are made by coating thick-sliced sweet onions in a seasoned flour and egg wash, then pressing panko bread crumbs and optional cornmeal onto the surface before air frying until crisp and golden. This method yields crunchy, flavorful rings with a tender onion center.

Description

The preparation starts by slicing a large sweet onion into half-inch thick rings and separating them. The rings are dredged first in seasoned flour mixed with salt and cayenne pepper, then dipped in an egg and buttermilk mixture, and finally coated thoroughly with panko bread crumbs combined with vegetable oil and optional cornmeal for extra crunch. The double-coating helps the breading adhere and contributes to a crispy texture.

Once coated and sprayed lightly with cooking spray for crisping, the onion rings are arranged in a single layer in a preheated air fryer at 350°F. Cooking for 12-15 minutes crisps the exterior without requiring deep frying. The finished onion rings develop a crunchy exterior while retaining softness inside. A final sprinkle of seasoning salt enhances the flavor profile, providing a savory, lightly spiced snack or side dish.
