Air Fryer Plantains

Air Fried Plantains are ripe plantain slices cooked until tender and slightly caramelized using an air fryer. Lightly oiled and optionally salted, these slices develop a soft interior with golden edges, presenting a simple way to enjoy the natural sweetness and texture of ripe plantains.

Description

Preparation involves peeling ripe plantains after scoring their skin carefully, then slicing diagonally into half-inch thick pieces. These slices are lightly oiled and arranged in a single layer in the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking.

Cooking at 380°F for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping halfway, allows the plantains to soften while gaining slight browning on the surface. The air frying method reduces oil usage while achieving a caramelized exterior and tender center.

These air fried plantains are a versatile side or snack, complementing savory dishes or enjoyed on their own. Using fully ripe plantains, indicated by black skin, brings out the optimal natural sweetness.

To keep crispness, avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket, and cook in batches if needed. The plantains can be salted lightly before or after cooking to taste.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 plantain medium, ripe
  • 2 teaspoon neutral cooking oil I used avocado oil, generic cooking oil
  • salt optional

Instructions

  1. Using a sharp knife, cut the edges of the plantains. Run the knife through the skin of the plantain lengthwise, making sure not to cut the flesh. Peel the skin and discard. Then slice into 1/2" thick pieces diagonally.
  2. Spray oil or lightly grease the bottom of the air fryer basket. Line the plantains in the basket in a single layer. Spray some oil and sprinkle salt, if using. (If the plantains are firm, then you can also transfer them to a bowl and mix with oil and salt before lining in the air fryer basket)
  3. Turn on air fryer to 380°. Cook plantain for 10-12 minutes, flipping over half way through.
  4. Transfer plantain pieces carefully from air fryer basket to a serving plate. Repeat until all the plantain is cooked.

Notes

  • Cook plantains in a single layer and avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket for even crisping; cook in batches if necessary.
  • Wait until plantains are ripe (skin mostly black) for the sweetest flavor and best texture.
