Air Fryer Popcorn Recipe
Description
The Air Fryer Popcorn recipe relies on coating 1/4 cup of white or yellow popcorn kernels with a teaspoon of avocado oil or a high-heat oil. When placed in a lined air fryer basket, the kernels cook at 400°F for up to 15 minutes, but it is important to listen for popping sounds and stop once popping slows to avoid burning. The air fryer circulates hot air to pop the kernels, producing light, crisp popcorn.
The popcorn's texture depends on even distribution in the air fryer basket to allow air circulation. Once popped, the popcorn can be flavored with salt, melted butter, or any seasoning you prefer. This approach gives control over oil and seasoning and avoids microwave popcorn bag additives.
This method suits those who have an air fryer and want to make popcorn without the traditional stovetop or microwave ways. It’s a handy alternative with the benefit of manageable oil quantity and the ability to customize flavorings.
For best results, using a foil liner prevents kernels from falling through large basket holes and helps catch any stray kernels. Adjust timing by listening carefully to the popping to prevent burning. Use oils suitable for high heat to avoid off flavors.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup white popcorn kernels or yellow popcorn kernels
- 1 teaspoon avocado oil or oil that can withstand high heat
- salt butter and other seasonings of your choice
Instructions
- For air fryers with a basket with large air holes, line with aluminum foil securing by crimping the sides so the foil doesn't flail in the air fryer when on.
- In a small bowl add popcorn kernels and oil. Stir until popcorn kernels are well coated with the oil.
- Place kernels in the air fryer basket. Spread kernels in a single layer across the bottom of the air fryer.
- Turn temperature to 400°F degrees and timer to 15 minutes. After 5 minutes listen carefully for the kernels to pop. When the popping subsides turn off the air fryer.
- Enjoy with salt and melted butter or your favorite savory or sweet toppings.
Notes
- Line the air fryer basket with foil if it has large holes to prevent kernels from falling through.
- Use an oil that withstands high heat like avocado oil to coat the kernels evenly before air frying.
- Listen carefully during cooking and turn off the air fryer when the popping slows to avoid burning the popcorn.
