Air Fryer Potato Chips

Air Fryer Potato Chips are thinly sliced potatoes cooked to a crisp using an air fryer, resulting in a crunchy, golden snack. The recipe involves soaking the slices in cold water to prevent discoloration and enhance crispiness, then seasoning with olive oil and salt before air frying at 370°F. Cooking times are adjusted by tossing and removing chips as they crisp to avoid burning. These chips offer a convenient, oil-light way to enjoy homemade potato chips with control over seasoning and texture.

Description

Air Fryer Potato Chips transform baking potatoes into a crispy snack with minimal oil. The process starts with washing and slicing potatoes very thinly, then soaking the slices to remove excess starch and prevent them from turning brown. After drying thoroughly, the chips are coated lightly with olive oil and salted. Cooking in an air fryer at a moderately high temperature allows the chips to crisp evenly as they are stirred repeatedly and browning chips are removed to prevent burning. This method yields crunchy, homemade chips with a fresh potato flavor without deep frying.

The texture is crisp with slightly golden edges and a tender interior, depending on thickness. The simple seasoning keeps the focus on the taste and texture of the potato itself. These chips can be served as a snack or accompaniment to sandwiches and dips.

The soaking step is important for removing excess starch. Drying the slices well ensures they crisp rather than steam. Removing browned chips during cooking prevents bitterness. Leftover chips can be stored in a paper bag to keep them crisp, and reheating briefly in the air fryer or under the broiler refreshes their crunch.

Instructions

  1. Scrub potatoes and thinly slice into ⅛" slices using a mandolin.
  2. Place potato slices in a bowl of cold water and let soak 15-30 minutes. Drain well and dab dry with a towel.
  3. Preheat air fryer to 370°F. Toss potatoes with oil and season with salt to taste.
  4. Add potatoes to the air fryer and cook 10 minutes. Toss and continue to cook an additional 12-17 minutes stirring and tossing every few minutes or so.

Notes

  • Use a mandolin or a slicing tool to get uniform thin slices for even cooking.
  • Soaking potato slices in cold water helps prevent discoloration and results in crispier chips.
  • Dry the potato slices thoroughly before cooking to avoid sogginess.
  • Remove chips as they begin to brown to prevent burning during air frying.
  • Store chips in a brown paper bag with a clip to maintain crispness at room temperature.
  • If chips lose crispness, reheat them in the air fryer or under a broiler briefly to restore crunch.
