Air Fryer Prime Rib Recipe
Description
This recipe prepares a boneless prime rib roast to fit inside an air fryer basket. The roast is coated with softened butter and Worcestershire sauce, then rubbed with prepared horseradish, fresh chives, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper for layered savory flavors. The cooking begins with a high-temperature sear at 375°F to lock in juices and develop a crust.
After searing, the temperature is reduced to 315°F to cook the prime rib through to medium rare, typically between 132-135°F internal temperature, checked with a digital meat thermometer. The air fryer method cooks the beef relatively quickly while preserving juiciness and creating a crusty exterior from the seasoning. Monitoring internal temperature closely ensures the perfect doneness.
After cooking, letting the roast rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing retains moisture and allows flavors to settle. This method produces a flavorful main course suitable for a special meal.
Because the meat must fit inside the air fryer, a boneless roast is recommended. Using a meat thermometer and removing the roast a few degrees before desired doneness prevents overcooking.
Ingredients
- 5-6 pound prime rib roast
- 3 tablespoons butter softened, unsalted
- ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1/3 cup horseradish prepared
- 2 tablespoons chive fresh
- 2 tablespoon garlic minced
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
Instructions
- First, verify that your roast fits in the air fryer. Trim it a little if necessary.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees F for 5 minutes and prepare the roast while it preheats.
- Pat the roast dry with a paper towel. Put the roast in a shallow pan and smear the butter all over the outside of the raw meat. Pour the Worcestershire sauce on top.
- Rub the horseradish all over the top and sides. Then add chives and crushed garlic. Sprinkle the meat with salt and pepper.
- Put the prepared prime rib into the air fryer basket and cook at 375 degrees F for about 15 minutes to sear the outside of the meat.
- Lower the cooking temperature to 315 degrees F. Continue air frying for another 45-50 minutes.
- Use a digital meat thermometer to check the internal temperature in the thickest part of the roast. It is done when it reaches 132 - 135 degrees F internally.
- If it has yet to reach your desired temperature, continue cooking. Air fry it for additional 5-8 minutes and then check again.
- Take the meat out of the air fryer. Let it rest for 10-20 minutes before slicing it and serving.
Notes
- Ensure the prime rib roast fits comfortably in your air fryer basket; a boneless roast is easiest to handle.
- A digital meat thermometer is essential to monitor internal temperature and achieve the desired doneness.
- Remove the roast when it is about 5 degrees below your target internal temperature to allow for carryover cooking.
- Rest the prime rib for at least 10 minutes after cooking to preserve juiciness and enhance flavor before slicing.
