Air Fryer Ribs
Description
The preparation starts by removing the membrane from the back of the ribs to improve tenderness and allow better penetration of seasoning. The rack is portioned to fit the air fryer. A spice rub, either pre-made or mixed from brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper, is pressed onto the meaty side of the ribs.
The ribs cook in the air fryer at 380°F for 20 minutes with bone side up, then flipped meat side up for another 10 minutes. An instant read thermometer verifies doneness at 195°F internal temperature, ensuring tender ribs. After reaching temperature, the ribs are coated with BBQ sauce and finished in the air fryer at 400°F for about 3 minutes to set the sauce.
This cooking approach yields ribs with a balance of smoky seasoning, a sweet and tangy BBQ glaze, and a tender interior without needing an oven or smoker.
Serving suggestions include traditional sides like cornbread, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, or baked beans to complete the meal.
Ingredients
- 1 rack pork baby back ribs
- 2 Tablespoons pork spice rub or spices below
- 1/4 cup BBQ sauce
Optional seasoning mix
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Use a sharp knife to peel the silver skin membrane off the back of the ribs.
- Cut the ribs to fit in your air fryer basket. Depending on the size you might not be able to fit an entire rack of ribs.
- Coat the meaty side of the ribs with the spice rub, pressing it into the top.
- Set the air fryer at 380 degrees F for 20 minutes. Put the ribs in the basket, bone side up.
- When the cooking time is up flip the ribs over so the meaty side is up. Cook at 380 F for another 10 minutes.
- Use an instant read thermometer to check that the internal temperature of the meat has reached 195 F. If not return it to the air fryer to cook longer.
- Brush the top of the ribs with the BBQ sauce. Set the air fryer at 400 F for another 3 minutes of cooking.
Notes
- Remove the membrane from the ribs before cooking for improved tenderness and seasoning absorption.
- Check internal temperature with a thermometer to ensure ribs reach 195°F for optimal tenderness.
- These ribs pair well with sides such as cornbread, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, or baked beans to round out the meal.
