Air Fryer Shrimp Cakes
Description
Air Fryer Shrimp Cakes use cooked shrimp chopped into small pieces combined with bread crumbs, eggs, and fresh herbs like dill and green onion. The addition of lemon juice and zest brightens the flavor, while smoked paprika and Italian herbs add subtle depth. The mixture is formed into patties and cooked in an air fryer with parchment paper to maintain shape, developing a golden crust in about 13-15 minutes total, flipping halfway through. This method produces shrimp cakes that have a crisp exterior and juicy interior, highlighting the texture of the shrimp chunks rather than a smooth paste.
The flavor is mild with a hint of heat from hot sauce and freshness from lemon and herbs. Garlic and onion powders contribute savory notes without overpowering the shrimp. These cakes can be served simply with lemon wedges and tartar sauce, which add acidity and creaminess to balance the shrimp's light sweetness and spice.
Using sliced or seasoned breadcrumbs like panko can alter the crunch level and flavor, while pulsing the shrimp more finely results in a smoother texture if preferred. Laying parchment paper in the air fryer helps keep the cakes intact during cooking. This recipe is suitable for those who want a seafood dish that is easy to prepare with minimal oil and maximum flavor from fresh ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Shrimp cooked, shelled, and deveined
- 1 cup bread crumbs plain
- 2 egg beaten, large
- 2 tablespoons hot sauce
- 2 tablespoons green onion finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons dill finely chopped, fresh
- 1 lemon juiced, and zested
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 onion powder
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 teaspoon italian herb blend dried
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper ground
- lemon for serving, wedges
- tartar sauce for serving
Instructions
- Preheat your air fryer to 370 degrees F.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the cooked shrimp into small cubed-like pieces.
- Add the shrimp to a large bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Stir gently to combine.
- Form the shrimp mixture into 8-10 patties. You can use an ice cream scoop to make each sized portion.
- Place a piece of parchment paper down inside the hot air fryer then carefully place each shrimp cake in the air fryer.
- Cook for 8-10 minutes until the crust turns golden brown. Flip and cook for 5 more minutes.
- Serve.
Notes
- To maintain texture, chop shrimp into chunks rather than pureeing unless a finer texture is preferred.
- Substitute panko or seasoned breadcrumbs for more crunch and flavor.
- Always lay parchment paper in the air fryer basket to prevent cakes from falling apart during cooking.
