Air Fryer Spicy Honey Chicken Wings Recipe

This recipe delivers chicken wings with a balance of spicy and sweet flavors, enhanced by a homemade honey hot wing sauce featuring guajillo chilies and citrus juices. The wings are air-fried to a crispy exterior, making them less oily than traditional frying methods. The sauce is simmered until slightly thickened, coating the wings in a flavorful glaze. Adjusting the number of chili seeds controls the heat level, while a touch of honey softens the spice.

Description

The Air Fryer Spicy Honey Chicken Wings Recipe combines crisp air-fried wings with a sauce made from guajillo chilies, paprika, garlic, onion, orange and lime juice, honey, and vinegar. The wings are seasoned simply with salt, pepper, and olive oil before air frying at high heat until crispy. The sauce is prepared by boiling chilies, blending them with spices and acidic ingredients, then simmering to concentrate flavors. This preparation results in wings with a moist interior and a spicy-sweet, slightly tangy coating.

The chili seeds can be left in or removed to control spiciness, and additional heat can be added with sriracha. The wings are best served garnished with fresh cilantro and accompanied by ranch or blue cheese dressing, providing cooling contrast. This recipe suits those looking for a crispy, flavorful wing with a nuanced spicy honey glaze made using an air fryer for less oil use.

The method suggests preheating the air fryer and cooking wings in batches if necessary, ensuring even crisping. Sauce ingredients can be strained for smoothness. Adjust the cooking time between 20 to 25 minutes depending on desired crispiness.

Ingredients

Servings

Air Fryer Chicken Wings

  • 2.2 pounds chicken wings
  • 1/2 teaspoon each salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon each black pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil

Honey Hot Wing Sauce

  • ½ cup of orange juice
  • lime juice juice of 3 limes
  • 6 guajillo chili cleaned with no seeds or veins. If you want them spicy, leave two of them with the seeds. It is important to see my notes for this
  • 2 Tablespoons paprika
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons apple vinegar
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 Tablespoons onion chopped
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 Tablespoons honey

Instructions

Air Fry Chicken Wings

  1. Clean the chicken wings and place in a medium bowl. Season them with salt and pepper, together with 1 Tablespoon of olive oil. Mix until evenly combined.
  2. Preheat your air fryer to 390 degrees and for 20 to 25 minutes, depending on how crispy you want them. Place the wings in one layer on the air fryer rack and begin cooking once it is preheated. (If you have a small air fryer, work in batches if needed.)

Spicy Honey Wing Sauce

  1. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan add the guajillo chilis with 1/2 cup of water and let it boil for 6 minutes.
  2. Pour the chilies with the water left in the sauce pan, together with the garlic, onion, paprika, orange juice, lime juice, and vinegar into a blender or vitamix. Blend until smooth. Use a strainer to make sure you remove any pieces of chili, so it is completely smooth.
  3. In a medium saucepan, add one tablespoon of olive oil. Let it heat up and pour the sauce into the pan and heat over low heat until it thickens a bit, about 10 minutes. Stirring constantly. While it's heating up, add in the honey, and additional salt and pepper to taste. Mix until combined.
  4. Remove the chicken wings from the air fryer and place them into a large mixing bowl. Pour the sauce on top and toss until evenly covered. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Adjust the heat by leaving seeds in two or all guajillo chilies or removing them completely for mildness.
  • Add one or two tablespoons of sriracha to the sauce for extra spiciness if desired.
  • Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve with ranch or blue cheese dressing to complement heat and flavor.
  • Cook wings in batches if your air fryer is small to ensure even crispiness.
