Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Description
This recipe uses sliced sweet potatoes cut into long, skinny pieces about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide to optimize crispiness. After coating the fries in olive oil and a blend of salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder, they are arranged in an air fryer basket for even cooking. Shaking or flipping the fries halfway through cooking promotes uniform crispness. The fries are cooked at 400°F to achieve a browned edge without drying out.
The texture balances crispy, wrinkled edges with a soft interior, and the spices offer a flavorful kick. The air fryer method produces fries with less oil while maintaining the satisfying texture of fried sweet potato fries.
These sweet potato fries make a good side dish for various meals or a simple snack. Their seasonings can be adapted by substituting spices to alter the flavor profile.
Alternatives in seasoning include cinnamon for a sweet profile or chili powder for a spicy variation. Adjusting slice thickness affects crispiness, with thinner slices resulting in a crisper fry.
Ingredients
- 2-3 sweet potato
- 2-3 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Clean the sweet potatoes and pat them dry. Slice them into long and skinny french fry pieces about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch wide. Thinner fries will be crispier.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 F.
- Spray a little bit of olive oil on the air fryer basket to coat the bottom. This is separate from the 2-3 Tablespoons called for in the recipe.
- Put the sweet potato pieces in a bowl. Drizzle them with the oil, then add the salt, pepper, paprika and garlic powder.
- Toss everything so the fries are coated with the oil and seasonings.
- Put the sweet potato fries in the air fryer basket, leaving room for the air to circulate. You might need to cook these in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
- Cook at 400 F for 10 minutes. Halfway through take the basket out and shake it or flip the fries over.
- After 10 minutes check the fries. They are done when they are wrinkled and just starting to get dark brown on the edges.
- If they need more time put them back in for another 1-5 minutes. The cooking time will depend on how thick the fries are and your air fryer's wattage.
- Continue to cook another batch of fries. You can store the fries in a 220 F oven to keep them warm while you make more batches.
Notes
- Seasonings can be changed to cinnamon for sweet fries or chili powder for spicy fries.
- Slice fries thinner for crispier texture.
- Cook fries in batches if your air fryer basket is small to ensure even cooking.
