Air Fryer Tater Tots
Description
This recipe poaches peeled potatoes until partially cooked, chills them, and then shreds the potatoes to remove excess moisture. Combined with cornstarch and dried herbs such as oregano and garlic powder plus salt, the mixture forms a dough that can be shaped into tater tots. Air frying at 350°F crisps the exterior while keeping the interior fluffy.
The seasoning blend and cornstarch help achieve a crispy outer crust and evenly cooked interior. Turning the tots during cooking allows for uniform color and texture. The method avoids frying in oil, offering a lighter alternative while retaining signature tater tot taste and texture.
Serve immediately with dips like vegan ranch or tomato sauce. The recipe yields about twenty tots and recommends keeping them spaced in the air fryer basket for best results.
For extra crispiness, a light spray of cooking oil can be used before cooking or additional time can be added cautiously. Store leftovers refrigerated in an airtight container for up to three days and reheat briefly to refresh texture.
Ingredients
Air Fryer Tater Tots Ingredients:
- 6 potato or 8 medium, peeled, large
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 ½ teaspoons oregano dried
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- salt
Instructions
How To Make Tater Tots in Air Fryer:
- Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees F / 180 degrees C.
- Boil the potatoes till they are about half cooked and then plunge them into a cold water bath to stop the cooking process and cool them down.
- Using a box shredder, shred the cooled potatoes into a large bowl, then squeeze out any excess water.
- Add in the rest of the ingredients and combine. Then form the mixture into individual tater tots (I was able to make about 20).
- Place half of the homemade tater tots into the air fryer basket (making sure they don’t touch) and cook for 18-20 minutes till golden brown. Turn the tots twice during cooking so that they brown evenly.
- Remove the tater tots and keep warm, then repeat steps to make the remaining air fryer tater tots.
- Serve your air fryer tater tots with a side of vegan ranch dressing or tomato sauce for dipping.
Homemade Tater Tots In The Oven:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F / 200 degrees C / fan-assisted 180 degrees C / gas 6.
- Place formed tater tots on a baking tray and bake for 18-20 minutes till golden brown.
- Serve your homemade tater tots with a side of vegan ranch dressing or tomato sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Use starchy potatoes like russets for a fluffy interior and crisp exterior.
- Remove excess moisture from shredded potatoes to prevent sogginess.
- Keep tater tots uniform in size for even cooking.
- Preheat the air fryer and cook in a single layer with space for air circulation.
- Turn the tots periodically during cooking to achieve even browning.
- Cook immediately after preparation for best texture; reheat leftovers briefly.
- Store in airtight container refrigerated up to 3 days.
- Cooking times vary by air fryer model; start with less time and add as needed for doneness.
