Air Fryer Tilapia Recipe
Description
The recipe preheats an air fryer to 400°F and prepares tilapia fillets by drying them and brushing on a mixture of lemon juice, olive oil, and minced garlic. Seasoned with salt and pepper, the fillets cook in a single layer to allow hot air circulation. The fish is cooked 8-12 minutes until it flakes easily and reaches an internal temperature of 145°F. The result is tender fish with lightly browned edges but not crispy.
This straightforward preparation highlights the mild flavor of tilapia enhanced by citrus and garlic, suitable to serve with fresh lemon wedges and herbs, making for a clean, bright seafood dish. It can be paired with vegetables or grains for a balanced meal.
The recipe notes mention it works with frozen fillets by adjusting the cooking method, and it can be applied to other white fish varieties like flounder or catfish. Flipping is unnecessary, and seasoning may be added partway through cooking when using frozen fish.
Ingredients
- 2 tilapia fillets
- 1 lemon or 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 F for 2-3 minutes.
- Pat each piece of fish dry with paper towels.
- If using a fresh lemon juice it to obtain about 2 Tablespoons of lemon juice
- Mix the lemon juice, oil, garlic in a small bowl and stir.
- Brush both sides of the fish fillets with the lemon juice and oil mixture. Then sprinkle salt and pepper to taste on the fish fillet. I use about 1/4 teaspoon of each per fillet.
- Place the fillets in the air fryer basket, in a single layer, making sure there is space for the air to circulate.
- Cook at 400 F for 8-12 minutes, until the fish has reached an internal temperature of 145 F. When it is done the fish will be lightly brown at the edges but not crispy. It should flake easily with a fork.
- Serve with lemon wedges and fresh herbs like basil, parsley or chives.
Notes
- You can cook frozen tilapia by air frying at 360°F for 8 minutes, then seasoning and cooking at 400°F for 5-8 minutes more.
- This method suits other white fish such as flounder, rainbow trout, or catfish.
- Flipping fillets is not needed during air frying.
