Air Fryer Turnips
Description
The recipe strips turnips of their peels and slices them into ½-inch thick fries. They are tossed with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, pepper, and oil to ensure even seasoning and a slight crisping coating. Air frying at 380°F cooks them quickly, with a shake midway to promote even browning. The fries develop a slightly crisp exterior while remaining tender inside, showcasing the natural sweetness and mild bitterness of turnips.
Finishing with lemon juice adds a zesty brightness that lifts the earthiness of the turnips, and optional chopped parsley provides a fresh herbal note. This method produces a healthier alternative to deep-fried fries, making use of a neutral oil that doesn't overpower the spices. The dish works well as a snack or side.
Turnips should be uniformly cut for even cooking. If desired, seasoning can be varied with chili-lime or chaat masala for additional flavor layers. Alternatively, rutabagas can replace turnips using the same method. An oven-baked option offers a similar texture, though air frying gives the crispiest results.
