Almond Sugar Cookies
Description
Almond Sugar Cookies combine room temperature salted butter and granulated sugar creamed until light and fluffy, then mixed with almond extract for a distinct fragrance. Dry ingredients including flour, baking powder, and salt are incorporated to create a cookie dough that holds shape well. Rolling into 1-inch balls and flattening with a sugar-coated glass produces an even thickness, allowing crisp edges with a tender middle after baking at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 7-8 minutes.
The texture is slightly chewy with a gentle crunch on the outside, and the almond extract enhances the flavor without overpowering. The sugar on top adds a subtle sparkle and additional sweetness. These cookies are suitable for casual snacking or festive occasions.
They are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain freshness. While the recipe prefers flattened cookies, leaving the dough balls unflattened results in thicker cookies with a chewier bite.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter room temperature, salted
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- sugar if desired, additional, for rolling cookies
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed. Then mix in the almond extract.
- Add the flour, baking powder and salt. Mix well.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
- Roll the dough into 1 inch balls and place on an ungreased baking sheet.
- Dip the bottom of a glass in sugar, then lightly press down on the cookies to flatten them.
- Bake at 400º Fahrenheit for 7-8 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool for 1 minute before removing them to a wire rack.
- Store in an airtight container.
Notes
- The dough can be dropped by teaspoonfuls if a thicker, rounded cookie is desired instead of flattening.
- Sprinkling extra sugar on top before baking adds a gentle crunch and visual appeal.
- Store cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh and prevent drying.
