Ambrosia Salad
Description
The Ambrosia Salad recipe blends a fluffy whipped topping base with sour cream, enhanced by pineapple tidbits, mandarin oranges, red grapes, maraschino cherries, miniature marshmallows, shredded coconut, and chopped pecans. This combination delivers a creamy texture with bursts of juicy fruit and chewy marshmallows, accented by the crunch of nuts and the sweetness of coconut. The fruits must be carefully drained to keep the salad from becoming watery. The salad is combined in a bowl and can be enjoyed immediately or refrigerated to develop flavors and serve chilled. It works well as a refreshing addition to potlucks, holiday meals, or summer menus where a light, sweet dish is welcome.
When serving, garnish with extra fruit pieces for visual appeal. To maintain texture and flavor, avoid excess liquid from canned fruits. The marshmallows add a soft contrast to the crunchy pecans, creating a balance of mouthfeel within each bite.
The salad can be prepared in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days, though some separation and softening of the marshmallows may occur over time.
Ingredients
- 8- ounce whipped topping thawed, container
- ½ cup sour cream
- 3 cups miniature marshmallows white or colored
- 1 ½ cups pineapple tidbits drained very well
- 11 ounce mandarin oranges drained very well, canned
- 1 cup red grapes or green grapes
- 1 cup maraschino cherries drained very well
- 1 cup coconut sweetened shredded
- ¾ cup pecans lightly chopped or diced
Instructions
- To a large bowl, add all ingredients, stir well to combine, optionally garnish with extra mandarin orange segments and a maraschino cherry.
- Serve immediately or cover and serve chilled. May be made the night before an event, covered, refrigerated, and served the next day.
Notes
- Drain canned pineapple, mandarin oranges, and maraschino cherries thoroughly to prevent excess liquid in the salad.
- Chilling the salad before serving helps flavors meld and enhances texture.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days; expect some softening as juices release.
