Antibacterial Hand Scrub
Description
The Antibacterial Hand Scrub is made by mixing salt—preferably finely ground kosher or sea salt—with sweet almond oil, coconut oil, and optionally jojoba oil for added moisturizing benefits. Liquid Castile soap can be included to increase cleansing action. Tea tree oil contributes antibacterial qualities, while peppermint and lemon essential oils add scent and may offer additional cleansing effects.
The hand scrub’s grainy texture exfoliates dead skin when massaged onto the hands, and the oils help maintain skin hydration. Using a small bowl and storing the mixture in a jar makes it convenient to scoop and apply. The recipe yields about one cup of scrub and can be scaled up for gift sets.
Usage involves rubbing a small amount onto hands for about 20 seconds, then rinsing with warm water. It is recommended to avoid introducing water into the scrub container to preserve quality and extend shelf life.
Storage instructions include keeping the lid tightly closed to prevent rancidity of oils, with typical shelf life about six months. Ingredients
- 1 cup salt or pulse kosher salt in food processor until fine, fine sea salt
- 3-4 tablespoons Sweet almond oil
- 3-4 tablespoons coconut oil pure
- 1 tablespoon Jojoba oil optional
- 1 tablespoons Castile soap optional, liquid form
- 1/2 teaspoon tea tree oil
- 10-15 Peppermint Essential Oil optional, drops
- 5-10 Lemon Essential Oil optional, drops

Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in small mixing bowl, mix to combine well. Spoon into desired jar or storage container with lid.
- If making as gifts, place in desired lidded jar(s), apply label (see post for free printable), small scoop and tie with jute or twine.
- Scoop small amount into palm of hand, gently rub all over hands for 20 seconds, then rinse with warm water. Use once or twice daily. Avoid introducing water into the scrub.
- Makes about 1 cup (8 oz), easily double, triple or more the recipe for multiple gift options.
Notes
- Store the scrub in a sealed container to prevent oils from turning rancid; discard if it develops an off smell, usually after about six months.
- Avoid contaminating the scrub by keeping water out of the jar to maintain its texture and effectiveness.
- Use the scrub once or twice daily to exfoliate hands, but exercise caution with tea tree oil if prone to eczema as it may irritate sensitive skin.
