Apple Bread

This Apple Bread is a moist loaf featuring shredded green apples blended into a spiced batter with cinnamon and nutmeg. The mix of white and brown sugars balances sweetness, and melted butter and unsweetened applesauce give it a tender, cake-like crumb. Baking yields a golden crust with a soft interior packed with gentle apple flavor and warming spices.

Description

Apple Bread is made by combining wet ingredients—eggs, vanilla, melted butter, unsweetened applesauce, and sugars—with dry ingredients of flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Fresh green apples are peeled and shredded then folded into the batter, which is poured into a greased loaf pan and baked until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

The resulting bread has a moist, tender texture with the tartness and freshness of green apples standing out against the warming cinnamon and nutmeg. The melted butter adds a smooth richness, while applesauce keeps it moist without extra fat. The golden crust offers slight firmness contrasting with the soft interior.

This bread can be served for breakfast, a snack, or dessert. Storing it in a covered container at room temperature keeps it fresh for several days. It also freezes well after cooling, and careful thawing in the refrigerator preserves its texture. Choosing tart apple varieties like Granny Smith enhances the flavor profile.

The use of unsweetened applesauce and a mix of sugars calibrates sweetness for a balanced taste. Checking doneness by toothpick ensures the center is baked through without overbaking and drying the loaf.

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup butter melted and cooled, melted
  • ¾ cup applesauce unsweetened
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a loaf pan and set aside.
  2. In a small mixing bowl add the eggs, vanilla extract, melted butter and applesauce. Stir until completely combined. Mix in the sugars. Stir until combined.
  3. In a large mixing bowl add the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir with a fork to combine. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Add in the shredded apple and stir.
  4. Pour dough into prepared loaf pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 50-60 minutes, top will be golden brown. Check that it's cooked by inserting a toothpick in the center, once it's done cooking the toothpick will come out clean, no dough will be stuck on it.

  6. Store covered at room temperature for 3-4 days.

Notes

  • Use fresh green apples like Granny Smith for tartness; Pink Lady, Gala, or Fuji are good alternatives.
  • Choose unsweetened applesauce to maintain a balanced sweetness and moist texture.
  • Melted butter provides smooth richness; substitute non-dairy fats if needed.
  • Combine light brown and white sugars for nuanced sweetness.
  • Store the baked bread in a sealed container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
  • For longer storage, freeze cooled bread wrapped in freezer-safe packaging for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.
