You can make wonderful apple bread with fresh apples, cinnamon, and pie spices.

Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2/3 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup coarsely grated raw apple (about 2 medium apples)
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- Grease for the pan (shortening)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan with shortening.
- In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
- In a separate mixing bowl, combine the shortening, sugar, and eggs. Beat well with an electric mixer.
- Stir in the apples and about half of the sifted dry ingredients.
- Add the buttermilk and stir with a spoon until incorporated.
- Add the rest of the flour mixture and stir just until well mixed.
- Fold in the walnuts.
- Pour the batter into a greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a rack.
