Apple Chips
Description
To prepare Apple Chips, apples are cored if desired and thinly sliced to about 1/8 inch thickness using a very sharp knife or mandolin. After sprinkling with cinnamon, the slices can be baked in a low oven at 200°F for approximately three hours, flipping once to ensure even crispness. Alternatively, air frying at 300°F for about 15 minutes with occasional flipping is a faster method.
The slow oven drying or air frying gradually removes moisture from the apples, resulting in a crisp texture reminiscent of chip-style snacks but with natural fruit sweetness. Cooling on a wire rack after cooking helps prevent sogginess and enhances crunch.
These crisp slices are ideal for healthy snacking or garnish, carrying subtle cinnamon heat that blends well with many drinks or desserts.
Once cooled completely, store the apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week to maintain their crispness.
Ingredients
- 2 apple like honeycrisp or pink lady
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Use an apple corer to core the apples if you prefer. Then using a very sharp knife or a mandolin, slice the apples widthwise into ⅛ inch thickness.
- Transfer the apple slices to a large bowl and sprinkle with cinnamon. Toss well to combine.
For Oven
- Preheat oven to 200°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Arrange the apples in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets. Bake in the preheated oven until the apples are crisp to the touch, about 3 hours, flipping halfway through.
- Transfer the apples to a wire rack and allow to come to room temperature, which will help them get more crisp.
For Air Fryer
- Preheat oven to 300°F.
- Arrange the apples in a single layer in the air fryer, being careful not to overlap them. Air fry until they are crisp to the touch, about 15 minutes, flipping a few times.
- Transfer the apples to a wire rack and allow to come to room temperature, which will help them get more crisp.
Notes
- After baking or air frying, cool the apple chips thoroughly on a wire rack to achieve maximum crispness.
- Store cooled apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain texture for up to one week.
