Ingredients

Servings
  • 10-12 apple assorted such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp or Gala, medium
  • 2 orange peeled and sectioned
  • 1 Tbsp clove whole
  • 4 cinnamon stick
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1 nutmeg whole
  • 16-20 cups water
  • ½ to 1 c. brown sugar depending on taste

Instructions

  1. Clean and cut apples and oranges. Add them to a large stock pot. Then add seasonings. Cover with water.
  2. Heat stockpot over high heat until simmering. Continue to simmer about 2 hours or until apples are very soft
  3. Mash apples and oranges with a potato masher or large wooden spoon against the side of the pot. Cover mixture and simmer for another hour.
  4. Carefully strain solids from cider using a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer, pressing solids against the strainer to release the juices. Discard the solids left in strainer or cheesecloth.
  5. Add brown sugar to taste. Stir to mix and dissolve.
  6. Serve warm, room temperature or chilled with apple slices and cinnamon stick, if desired

Notes

  • Using whole spices makes a big difference! Whole cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon sticks stay fresher longer and also won’t leave any gritty spices in your drink.
  • Dress up your homemade apple cider and garnish each serving with cinnamon sticks, sliced apples, and sliced oranges.
  • If you are making it for a party, transfer it to a slow cooker and set it to low. Your guests can help themselves to mugs of warm cider!
  • You can make sparkling apple cider by chilling it first and then mixing it with sparkling water or club soda. Or serve hot or cold spiked with bourbon, rum, or vodka!
