Apple Cinnamon French Toast

Apple Cinnamon French Toast combines slices of white bread dipped in a spiced egg and milk batter, cooked until browned, then topped generously with a warm apple-cinnamon-brown sugar compote. The topping is made by simmering peeled apple slices with butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until tender and slightly thickened, delivering sweet, spiced fruitiness that complements the tender toast. This comforting breakfast choice balances creamy textures with soft fruit.

Description

The Apple Cinnamon French Toast recipe features white bread slices soaked in a mixture of eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and flour, providing a thick batter coating that cooks to a browned exterior with a tender interior. The bread is cooked in a pan over medium heat until both sides develop a light golden color.

The apples are peeled and sliced, then cooked with brown sugar and butter to create a caramelized fruit compote flavored with cinnamon and vanilla. This mixture simmers to soften the apples and thicken the sauce, which is spooned generously over the cooked French toast slices. The dessert-like topping adds warmth and sweetness, contrasting the rich, eggy toast.

The dish can be dusted with powdered sugar for added sweetness and presentation. For best flavor and texture, thicker bread slices about an inch thick are recommended. The cooked apple topping can be prepared ahead and reheated gently to save time on serving mornings.

Leftover French toast tends to become soggy, so storing just the batter and reheating the topping separately is suggested if making in advance.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 medium apple peeled and sliced
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla divided
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon divided
  • 6-8 lices white bread
  • 2 egg lightly beaten
  • ½ cup milk
  • /3 cup flour
  • powdered sugar optional

Instructions

  1. Add apple slices, brown sugar, and butter in a medium sauce pan. Cook over medium high heat until brown sugar has dissolved and butter has melted. Add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and reduce heat to simmer. Cook 6-8 minutes longer. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly and thicken while you prepare toast.
  2. In a large, wide bowl whisk together eggs, vanilla, milk, and cinnamon. Stir in flour and whisk until smooth. Completely submerge one slice of bread in the mixture, careful to coat both sides. Lift the bread out of the liquid and allow to drip off excess.
  3.  Cook toast in a large pan over medium heat 1-2 minutes until lightly browned, then flip and cook other side 1-2 minutes. Repeat with remaining bread slices. Generously top toasts with apple-cinnamon mixture. Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Prepare the apple cinnamon topping the night before and reheat gently to save time.
  • Use thick bread slices (at least 1 inch) to maintain texture during cooking.
  • Store leftover batter separately for best freshness; French toast itself can become soggy when stored cooked.
