Apple French Toast Casserole Recipe
Description
The Apple French Toast Casserole Recipe uses apple cinnamon bread sliced thick and soaked in a mixture of eggs, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and a pinch of salt to create a custard base. The bread absorbs the mixture to produce moist, flavorful layers. A topping of sliced baking apples, such as Honey Crisp or Granny Smith, tossed with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and butter adds sweetness and spice, complementing the bread's warmth.
Once assembled in a casserole dish, the dessert is baked until the custard sets and the apples become tender. The contrasting textures of soft bread and nicely cooked apple slices provide a comforting yet fresh mouthfeel. The cinnamon and nutmeg give an autumnal spice accent without overwhelming the fruit's natural flavors.
This casserole fits well for a breakfast or brunch centerpiece and works well with a side of syrup or yogurt. It can be prepared the night before and baked the next morning, making it practical for gatherings. The recipe suggests that gently sautéing the apple topping before baking can intensify the sweetness and soften the fruit for a more dessert-like finish. Any crusty bread will work but apple cinnamon bread enhances the taste.
