Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 apples
  • 100 g pecan halves
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 100 g granulated sugar
  • 100 g flour
  • 100 g butter
  • 3 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius (350 Fahrenheit).
  2. To make the filling, peel and chop the apples.
  3. Butter an ovenproof dish, and add the apples together with the brown sugar, cinnamon and maple syrup.
  4. Toss well to coat the apples.
  5. Scatter half of the pecans over the apples.
  6. To make the crumble topping, roughly chop the remaining pecans, or add them to a food processor to blitz very briefly.
  7. Melt the butter and allow it to cool slightly.
  8. In a large bowl, sift the flour, add the melted butter, chopped pecans and sugar, and mix well.
  9. Top the apples with the pecan crumble topping and bake for 30 minutes or until golden.

Notes

  • This crumble is incredibly easy to make, and it's pretty much failproof. Depending on the type of apples used, the filling will be either slightly tart and sweet, or just sweet.
  • You don't necessarily need cooking apples for this recipe, it works with pretty much anything you have.
  • Make sure the oven temperature is moderate, too high, and the topping will brown before the apples have a chance to soften. While it will still be nice to eat, it won't be quite the texture we are after.
