Apple Tuna Salad Recipe

This Apple Tuna Salad blends the savory flavor of well-drained canned tuna with crisp diced Granny Smith apple and creamy avocado, joined by toasted nuts for crunch. The salad is bound with mayonnaise and rounded out with a touch of lemon juice and black pepper. Its combination of textures—from tender tuna to crunchy almonds—and the balance of fresh, creamy, and savory notes make it suitable as a light lunch or a sandwich filling.

Description

The Apple Tuna Salad Recipe features drained tuna combined with diced onion, tart apple, creamy avocado, and nuts toasted until golden. Mixing these ingredients with mayonnaise and lemon juice adds creaminess and a slight acidity that balances the flavors. The finely diced onion adds texture and sharpness, while black pepper seasons the salad subtly. It is important to drain the tuna thoroughly to avoid excess moisture, which would water down the salad. This salad works well served chilled, either on its own or as a sandwich or wrap filling, making for a refreshing and satisfyingly textured dish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 20 oz tuna four, 5-oz cans), well drained, in water
  • 1 onion 1 1/3 cup finely diced, medium
  • 1 apple seeded and diced, medium, Granny Smith
  • 1 avocado pitted, peeled and diced
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise or added to taste, real
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice or to taste, fresh
  • 1/2 cup almonds toasted, sliced or chopped walnuts
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper or to taste

Instructions

  1. Toast nuts on a dry skillet until golden. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
  2. To drain tuna, I open the lid then press it down firmly over the tuna to drain off as much water as I can squeeze out. If your tuna is too wet, your salad will be wet.
  3. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and add a pinch of black pepper and 1/2 tsp lemon juice, or to taste. Add mayo to taste.
