Applesauce

Applesauce is made by gently simmering peeled and chopped apples with water until soft, then mashing or pureeing to a smooth consistency. This basic recipe can be lightly sweetened with sugar and flavored optionally with cinnamon or nutmeg. It results in a mildly sweet, smooth sauce that showcases the natural apple flavor. It is suitable as a snack, side dish, or ingredient in other recipes.

Description

The apples are peeled, cored, and chopped into similarly sized pieces to ensure even cooking. They are simmered with water and a small amount of optional sugar until very soft, around 10 to 15 minutes. The softened apples are then mashed or pureed to the desired texture.

The apple sauce can be flavored with cinnamon or nutmeg if desired, adding warm spice notes without overpowering the natural apple taste. The final texture is smooth or slightly chunky depending on blending.

This applesauce is versatile for serving alongside meals, as a topping, or as a mild sweet snack. It maintains a fresh flavor without added lemon juice, though lemon can prevent browning but is not required.

Choosing firm apples like Granny Smith gives a balanced tartness, but any variety or mix can be used for sweeter or milder flavors. Sugar is optional depending on the natural sweetness of the apples used.
