Applesauce Cake
Description
Applesauce Cake starts with a base of spice cake mix blended with cinnamon-flavored applesauce, melted butter, milk, and eggs, resulting in a batter that bakes into a moist and tender bundt cake. The cinnamon applesauce enhances the spice profile naturally, while the baking process develops a golden crust. Baking takes place at 350 degrees until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
The cake is then topped with a glaze made from butter browned until golden and slightly nutty tasting, combined with powdered sugar. This glaze drizzled over the cooled cake adds a smooth, slightly crisp coating that complements the soft interior.
This cake pairs well with coffee or tea and can be stored in the refrigerator tightly covered for a few days without losing texture. It’s a good choice when a spice-flavored dessert with a moist texture is desired.
When preparing the browned butter glaze, constant whisking is important once the butter starts foaming to prevent burning and to achieve the right color and flavor. Properly greasing and flouring the bundt pan ensures the cake releases cleanly after baking. The use of cinnamon applesauce enhances the spice flavor without additional spices, although plain applesauce with apple pie spice could substitute.
Ingredients
- 1 ounce box spice cake mix
- 1 1/4 cups applesauce cinnamon flavor
- 1/4 cup butter melted
- 1/3 cup milk
- 3 large egg
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a bundt pan.
- Add cake mix, applesauce, melted butter, milk, and eggs to the bowl of a mixer and beat until well combined, about 2 minutes.
- Pour batter into prepared bundt pan and bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cake cool for 10 minutes in the pan before flipping onto a cake plate. Cool completely before glazing.
- To prepare the glaze, melt the butter in a small sauce pan over medium heat. Once butter begins to foam, whisk constantly so that you can see the color of the butter underneath the foam. Continue cooking until butter begins to turn a deep golden brown.
- Remove from the heat and whisk in the powdered sugar until smooth.
- Drizzle the glaze over the top of the cake.
- Let sit for 15 minutes for the glaze to firm up before serving.
- Store in the refrigerator, tightly covered, for up to 3 days.
Notes
- For best results, generously grease and flour the bundt pan to prevent sticking.
- Use cinnamon applesauce for a natural spice flavor; plain applesauce plus apple pie spice can be substituted if needed.
- When browning butter for the glaze, whisk constantly to avoid burning as it changes quickly from golden to burnt.
- Store the cake covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
