Asian Cucumber Salad

Asian Cucumber Salad features crisp cucumber slices seasoned with salt to reduce water content, then tossed in a dressing of garlic, apple cider vinegar, sugar, chili powder, chili oil, and sesame oil, garnished with sesame seeds. It delivers a tangy, spicy, and nutty flavor with a refreshing crunch, ideal for a quick side dish.

Description

This salad uses varieties like Persian or Japanese cucumbers for their thin skins and fewer seeds, helping to avoid excess wateriness. The cucumbers are sliced, salted, and chilled to draw out moisture, improving texture and preventing a watery salad.

The dressing combines minced garlic, apple cider vinegar for mild acidity, sugar for balance, chili powder and chili oil for heat, and sesame oil for a rich, nutty flavor. Thorough mixing ensures the sugar dissolves fully, coating cucumbers evenly. The salad is topped with sesame seeds for crunch and garnish.

Asian Cucumber Salad is ready to serve immediately after mixing, offering a cool, vibrant side with a balanced combination of spicy, sour, sweet, and savory notes that complement many dishes.

Choosing the right cucumber and salting correctly makes a notable difference in the finished salad’s texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Use Persian, burpless, or Japanese cucumbers for thinner skins and fewer seeds to reduce watery salad.
  • Salting and chilling sliced cucumbers for 10-15 minutes draws out excess moisture for better texture.
  • Choose apple cider vinegar or rice wine vinegar for a mild tang that influences overall flavor.
  • Do not omit sesame oil as it contributes a distinctive nutty richness essential to the salad's character.
