Asian-Style Sloppy Joes
Description
The Asian-Style Sloppy Joes recipe blends ground beef with a vibrant sauce made from sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, hoisin, ketchup, brown sugar, and aromatic spices like garlic powder, onion, and ginger. Cooking the beef until browned and mixing it with the sauce ensures a juicy, flavorful filling. The sauce thickens slightly as it cooks, giving the sloppy joe a rich coating. Toasting the hamburger buns before assembling helps add texture and keeps the bread from becoming soggy from the saucy beef.
This dish delivers a fusion take on the classic sloppy joe, balancing sweet, savory, and tangy elements with sesame oil and rice vinegar for depth. Garnishing with sesame seeds adds a mild nutty flavor and visual appeal. It’s practical for casual meals and can be portioned to suit serving sizes.
To elevate the texture, toasting the buns is recommended but optional. Adjust the heat level by choosing sweet chili sauce according to your taste. Draining excess fat after cooking the beef can prevent greasiness in the filling. The recipe estimates six servings but can be scaled as needed. The calorie count excludes buns, acknowledging that bread choices will affect nutritional values.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef I like to use 85/15 or 90/10
- 3 Tbsp sweet chili sauce
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce reduced sodium
- 2 Tbsp ketchup
- 1 Tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 Tbsp packed light brown sugar
- 1 tsp sesame oil toasted
- 1 tsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp onion minced dried
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp sesame seeds for garnish
- Hamburger Bun for serving
Instructions
Toast buns (optional but recommended)
- Heat a large skillet over MED HIGH/HIGH heat. Add a drizzle of vegetable oil, and once hot, add buns, cut side down. Cook for 30 seconds to a minute (this time will vary), or until golden brown on the bottoms.
- Remove to a wire cooling rack, cut sides up.
Cook meat
- Heat a small drizzle of oil in large skillet over MED-HIGH heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking apart into crumbles as it cooks, about 5 minutes, or until cooked through. Transfer to colander to drain if necessary (depending on the leanness of your ground beef this may not be needed).
- Return beef to the same skillet.
Add sauce
- To the skillet, add sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, ketchup, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, rice vinegar, dried onion, garlic powder, ground ginger, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
- Cook for 1-2 minutes on MED heat, until sauce has thickened a bit, to your desired consistency.
Garnish and serve
- Remove skillet from the heat, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
- Serve over the toasted buns as a sandwich, or however you'd like.
Notes
- This recipe is estimated to serve six, but portion sizes can be adjusted based on preference.
- Calorie count does not include buns, as their type can vary widely.
- Toast the hamburger buns to add texture and prevent sogginess from the saucy beef.
- If your ground beef contains more fat, draining it after cooking helps reduce greasiness.
