Asian Style Sloppy Joes
Description
In Asian Style Sloppy Joes, ground pork or chicken is cooked gently with butter and a blend of aromatic ingredients including diced sweet onion, chili garlic paste, freshly grated ginger, and minced garlic, seasoned with salt and pepper. Once softened, the meat is browned and combined with hoisin sauce, soy sauce, drained fire-roasted tomatoes, and lime juice. The mixture is brought from boil to simmer and cooked until thickened, creating a flavorful, textured filling.
This filling is spooned onto toasted brioche buns, a soft bread that complements the richness of the pork. The sandwich is topped with broccoli slaw and shredded Napa cabbage, adding freshness, crunch, and slight vegetal bitterness to offset the sweet-savory meat mixture. The use of chili garlic paste and ginger introduces subtle heat and warmth typical of Asian flavors while maintaining a familiar sandwich format.
This recipe works well for casual meals where a handheld dish offers both comfort and a hint of international flavor. The slow simmering deepens the hoisin and soy flavors and tenderizes the meat, while the fresh garnishes contribute textural contrast and brightness.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 sweet onion diced
- 2 tablespoons chili garlic paste
- 1 tablespoon ginger freshly grated
- 1 garlic minced, clove
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 pound ground pork or chicken
- 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 fire roasted tomatoes 14-ounce can, drained
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 4 Brioche buns
- broccoli slaw for garnish
- Napa cabbage for garnish, shredded
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat and add the butter. Add in the onion, garlic paste, ginger, garlic, salt and pepper. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add in the ground pork or chicken, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Brown the meat, stirring often, for about 6 minutes. Stir in the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, tomatoes and lime juice. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce it to a simmer and cook until the mixture thickens, about 20 minutes.
- Serve the sloppy joes on the brioche buns, topped with both the broccoli slaw and napa cabbage.
Notes
- Butter helps soften aromatics and build flavor at the start.
- Simmer the meat mixture until thick to avoid runny sloppy joes.
- Use brioche buns for a soft, slightly sweet base that pairs well with the seasoned pork.
- Broccoli slaw and Napa cabbage add crispness and fresh contrast to the rich filling.
- This recipe can be adapted with chicken instead of pork for a lighter version.
