Authentic Greek Salad
Description
The Authentic Greek Salad starts by cutting tomatoes into wedges rather than cubes and slicing cucumbers into half-inch rounds, offering sturdy, juicy bites. Thinly sliced onions and green bell pepper add sharpness and crunch. Kalamata olives are scattered throughout for their briny depth. The centerpiece is a chunk of feta placed on top, sprinkled with oregano and additional olive oil.
Drizzling extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar over the salad provides a balance of richness and acidity that complements the fresh vegetables and salty cheese. The use of oregano enhances the herbal notes native to Greek cuisine.
This salad is typically served as a side dish or light meal and pairs well with grilled meats or seafood. The texture contrasts between crisp vegetables and crumbly feta provide satisfying variety.
Additional ingredients like capers can be added, and it’s advised not to use excessive olive oil so the salad is coated but not drenched.
Ingredients
- 2-3 tomato
- 1 cucumber medium
- 5-6 kalamata olives Greek, black
- 1/2 onion small
- 1/2 bell pepper small green
- 1 feta cheese chunk, about 2 to 3 ounces
- 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil + more for drizzling
- 1 tsp oregano dry
- 3 tbsp red wine vinegar
- salt
Instructions
- Cut the tomato in wedges-do not cut in cubes. If the tomato is large cut wedges in half.
- Peel the cucumber and cut in slices that are about ½ inch thick, you may cut the rounds in half.
- Slice onion and green bell pepper in thin slices.
- Put tomatoes and cucumbers in a shallow bowl and combine. Place the thinly sliced onion and pepper
- on top. Add the olives. Sprinkle with oregano.
- Drizzle with some olive oil and a splash of vinegar.* Add some salt to taste.
- Place a piece of feta on top and sprinkle the feta with oregano and another drizzle of olive oil.
Notes
- Consider adding capers to enhance the briny flavor.
- Use enough olive oil to coat the salad without oversaturating it to maintain balance.
