Authentic Japanese Gyoza Dipping Sauce
Description
This dipping sauce is composed of simple ingredients mixed to provide a bright acidity from rice vinegar and a savory depth from soy sauce. The inclusion of a small amount of chili oil adds subtle heat and aroma characteristic of traditional Japanese gyoza accompaniments. Ground black pepper lightly seasons the sauce, rounding out the flavor profile.
Prepared quickly by combining measured amounts of each ingredient, this sauce is intended to be served fresh alongside pan-fried gyoza, adding a flavorful contrast to the crispy, juicy dumplings.
The recipe yields enough sauce for two people, roughly 16 gyoza, making it suitable for sharing. It is recommended to store any unused fresh sauce refrigerated up to one week, but leftover sauce used with gyoza should not be kept. The sauce can be divided into separate smaller dishes to accommodate sharing customs.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tsp soy sauce
- ½ tsp Chili oil rayu
- ⅛ tsp black pepper ground
Instructions
- Add 1 tbsp rice vinegar, 2 tsp soy sauce, ½ tsp chili oil (rayu) and ⅛ tsp ground black pepper to a small bowl and mix until combined.

Notes

- Store unused fresh sauce in the refrigerator for up to one week.

- Divide sauce into smaller dishes if sharing among multiple diners.
