Avocado Toast

Avocado Toast combines ripe mashed avocado with toasted sourdough bread, optionally rubbed with fresh garlic and drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice. The toast's crisp texture contrasts with the creamy avocado, while kosher salt and black pepper enhance the flavors. This straightforward preparation highlights the freshness of the avocado and can be adjusted to a smoother or chunkier texture. Best eaten immediately to avoid browning, it serves well as a simple breakfast or snack.

Description

Avocado Toast starts with ripe avocado mashed to a preferred texture and spread over toasted sourdough or other bread. Lightly rubbing the hot toast with halved garlic adds a subtle aromatic note. Sprinkle kosher salt and black pepper to taste, and optionally drizzle with fresh lemon juice and high-quality extra virgin olive oil for brightness and richness. The combination offers a creamy and slightly tangy flavor with a contrast between the crisp toast and soft avocado.

This simple toast works well for a quick breakfast or snack, providing a balance of fat and complex carbohydrates. Eating it immediately after preparation is important because mashed avocado oxidizes and browns quickly. The recipe allows customization of the avocado's smoothness and additional toppings if desired.

The versatility of this dish means it can be paired with eggs or fresh vegetables to add protein and texture. The use of fresh garlic and quality olive oil enhances the flavor without overpowering the avocado's natural taste.

For freshness, keep the unused avocado half with the pit to slow browning if you save it for later use. Toast can be any variety, but sourdough gives a distinctive taste and chewiness that complements the avocado.

  • Keep the pit in the unused half avocado to help slow browning when refrigerated.
  • Optionally rub toasted bread with fresh garlic halves for a mild garlic flavor.
  • Use fresh lemon juice and good-quality extra virgin olive oil to enhance flavor without masking the avocado.
