Bacon and Cabbage

Bacon and Cabbage is a homey dish featuring crispy bacon pieces cooked first to render fat, then combined with sautéed onion and tender cabbage, finished with optional smoked paprika for warmth. The cabbage softens in bacon fat, absorbing its savory flavor while retaining some texture. This straightforward recipe produces a rich, mildly smoky side or main component, commonly served alongside noodles or as part of a hearty meal.

Description

This Bacon and Cabbage recipe begins by frying small bacon pieces until crisp, then removing the bacon but keeping rendered fat in the pan. Onions are sautéed in the bacon fat, creating a savory base before chopped cabbage is added and cooked until it softens to the desired tenderness. The optional smoked paprika adds a subtle smoky depth that complements the bacon's flavor. The bacon is returned near the end to warm through and distribute its texture. This method allows the cabbage to soak up the bacon richness without becoming overly greasy, while the onions add sweetness. This dish works well served on its own or with sides like egg noodles to create a filling meal.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 trips Bacon cut into smaller pieces
  • 1 medium cabbage cored & chopped
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika optional
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut the bacon into small pieces (I use kitchen shears to make this easy). Fry it in a deep skillet over medium-high heat until crispy (about 10 minutes). Once it's done, take the bacon out of the pan and leave about 2 tablespoons or so of the bacon fat in the pan.
  2. Add the onion to the skillet and sauté for 3 minutes.
  3. Stir in the cabbage and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes (depending on how soft you want the cabbage to be).
  4. Towards the last minute or two of cooking, stir in the smoked paprika and add the bacon back to the pan. Season with salt & pepper as needed and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Serving size varies; as a main, serve for 2, with noodles or sides for 4 or up to 6 as a side dish.
  • Use kitchen shears to cut bacon for ease and even cooking.
  • The nutritional info is approximate due to ingredient variability.
