Bacon and Egg Casserole
Description
This Bacon and Egg Casserole begins with shredded cheese spread evenly in a greased casserole dish and lightly coated with flour to help keep the cheese from clumping. Crumbled cooked bacon is sprinkled over the cheese. A mixture of beaten eggs, milk, kosher salt, black pepper, seasoned salt, dry mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika is poured over the layered bacon and cheese. The casserole can be refrigerated overnight to meld flavors and then baked until the center is set and the top lightly browned.
The dish is rich and flavorful with sharpness from the cheese and spiced seasoning, balanced by the smoky bacon. The texture is firm yet tender, making it easy to slice and serve for a group.
The spices can be adjusted to taste, and the recipe allows substitutions of ham or sausage for the bacon. Preparing the bacon and any alternative protein in advance and layering them separately yields a customized casserole.
Ingredients
- 16 ounces cheese shredded (I used half cheddar and half pepper jack)*
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 pound Bacon cooked and crumbled**
- 12 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 & 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt use half the amount if using table salt
- 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
- 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder dry
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
Instructions
- Spray a 9x13 inch casserole dish with nonstick spray or grease with butter.
- Place the shredded cheese in the dish and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of flour. Toss together with your fingers to distribute evenly.
- Sprinkle bacon evenly over the cheese.
- Beat the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, seasoned salt, dry mustard, onion, garlic, and paprika.
- Pour over the bacon and cheese.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight. OR, you can bake this right away! No need to cover.
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Bake uncovered for about 45 minutes, or until the center is set and the top has browned.
- Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.
Notes
- Any shredded cheese can be used; cheddar, Mexican blend, or Monterey Jack are all good options.
- Substitute cooked ham or sausage for bacon if preferred; cook thoroughly before adding.
- Adjust spices to taste; using Pepper Jack cheese adds heat.
- Bake bacon and kielbasa separately on a baking sheet before combining in the casserole for better texture.
