Bacon Jam
Description
The core of Bacon Jam is thick-cut bacon cooked until crisp, with most of the rendered fat removed to avoid greasiness. Onions sauté in the remaining bacon fat until soft, providing sweetness and depth. Brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and water are added and simmered down to a syrupy consistency, concentrating flavors and imparting a balanced sweetness and acidity.
The cooked bacon is chopped finely and stirred back into the mixture, contributing smoky, meaty texture to the jam. This versatile spread complements sandwiches such as hamburgers, chicken burgers, or roast beef sandwiches, and can also be used as a topping for grilled cheese, eggs, pork chops, or salads. It works well on bread like toast, bagels, or English muffins, and can even be used as a creative pizza topping or alongside cheese and crackers on charcuterie boards.
Serving bacon jam warm accentuates its flavors, but it can also be served cooled at room temperature. Its rich profile adds a savory-sweet punch to simple dishes, making it an interesting addition to breakfast or dinner menus.
Ingredients
- 10 lices Bacon (thick cut works best)
- 1 cup onion white or red, chopped
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar (or cider vinegar)
- 2 Tablespoons water
Instructions
- In a large non-stick skillet, cook bacon until crisp. Drain all but about 2 tablespoons of the bacon grease from the pan and remove the bacon to drain on paper towels.
- Add onion to the pan and saute until soft.
- Add brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and water. Reduce heat and simmer until sugar and vinegar reduce to a light syrupy texture.
- Chop bacon into small pieces and add to the mixture. Stir well to combine.
- Can be served hot or cooled to room temperature.
Notes
- Use thick-cut bacon to achieve the ideal texture and flavor in the jam.
- Drain most bacon grease after cooking to prevent the jam from becoming too greasy.
- Bacon jam can be spread on a variety of sandwiches, grilled meats, or breakfast dishes.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
- Try bacon jam as a topping for eggs or as a flavorful addition to cheese boards and salads.
