Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs

Report
This recipe wraps hot dogs individually in non-overlapping slices of bacon, secured with toothpicks, then cooks them until the bacon is crisp. You can bake them in the oven or grill them for a slightly smoky flavor and evenly browned bacon. After cooking, the bacon-wrapped hot dogs are served on buns, combining savory bacon crispness with classic hot dog texture. This approach ensures the bacon crisps well without burning or undercooking by spacing and turning the hot dogs during cooking.

Description

Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs involves wrapping each hot dog with a single bacon slice without overlap to allow even cooking. Securing the bacon with toothpicks prevents shifting during baking or grilling. Baking is done at 400°F for 13-16 minutes with a flip halfway through to brown all sides. Grilling requires a preheated grill at about 400°F, with the hot dogs turned every few minutes until bacon crisps. Resting the hot dogs briefly after cooking helps the bacon set before serving. They are placed in hot dog buns after removing toothpicks, offering a satisfying blend of smoky, crispy bacon and classic hot dog flavor.

Cooking methods give flexibility depending on available equipment, and careful bacon placement avoids uneven cooking or chewy spots. The recipe targets a balance between the smoky-salty bacon and the juicy, meaty hot dog.

Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to five days for reheating later.

Instructions

TO PREPARE THE HOT DOGS:

  1. Wrap each of the hot dogs with the slices of bacon.  Making sure not to overlap the bacon so that it cooks evenly.  Secure both ends of the bacon to the hot dog with toothpicks.

HOW TO BAKE:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.  Place the hot dogs on a baking sheet lined with foil or with parchment paper.
  2. Bake the hot dogs for 13-16 minutes (flipping them halfway through the cook time) until the bacon is cooked through and crispy.
  3. Allow them to sit for 5 minutes.  Remove the toothpicks. Then serve on the hot dog buns and enjoy!

HOW TO GRILL:

  1. Preheat the grill over high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).  Rub the grill grates with olive oil or spray with a non-stick cooking spray so that the hot dogs do not stick to the grill.
  2. Place the bacon wrapped hot dogs on the grill and cook with the grill lid closed for 8-12 minutes (turning them every 2-3 minutes) until the bacon is browned and crispy.
  3. Remove the hot dogs from the grill.  Allow them to sit for 5 minutes.  Remove the toothpicks. Then serve on the hot dog buns and enjoy!

HOW TO AIR FRYER:

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F.  If your air fryer does not have a preheat option, then run the air fryer at 400 degrees F for 5 minutes to warm it up.
  2. Rub the air fryer basket with oil so that the hot dogs do not stick to the basket.  Place the hot dogs in the air fryer basket. Cook at 400 degrees F for 8 minutes. Flip the hot dogs and cook for 5-6 more minutes at 400 degrees F until the bacon is cooked through and crispy.
  3. Remove the hot dogs from the air fryer.  Allow them to sit for 5 minutes.  Remove the toothpicks. Then serve on the hot dog buns and enjoy!

Notes

  • Wrap bacon slices without overlapping to ensure even bacon crispiness during cooking.
  • Secure bacon ends with toothpicks before cooking to keep bacon in place.
  • Flip the hot dogs halfway through baking or turn every 2-3 minutes on the grill for even cooking.
  • Let hot dogs rest 5 minutes after cooking before removing toothpicks and serving.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
