Bacon Wrapped Shrimp

This recipe wraps large peeled and deveined shrimp with thin bacon strips, secured with toothpicks and brushed with a honey, butter, barbecue sauce, sriracha, and garlic powder glaze. The shrimp are broiled until the bacon is crisp and the shrimp cooked through. The combination of smoky bacon and slightly sweet-spicy glaze highlights the shrimp's texture and flavor, making it suitable for appetizers or served on skewers as an entrée.

Description

Bacon Wrapped Shrimp features large shrimp wrapped individually in bacon strips, enhancing the shrimp's natural sweetness with smoky and savory bacon flavors. Wrapping and securing with toothpicks allows even cooking and easy handling. The sauce made from melted butter, honey, barbecue sauce, sriracha, garlic powder, salt, and pepper adds a balance of sweet, tangy, and mild heat, brushed in two stages during broiling.

The broiling method crisps the bacon and cooks the shrimp quickly, ensuring the shrimp remain tender while the bacon edges become crisp. Optional additions include skewering multiple shrimp for grilling or air frying, and a pineapple piece can be added for extra sweetness. Using thin bacon helps achieve the desired crispness without overcooking.

This dish works well as an appetizer or can be scaled to entrée portions by threading several shrimp on skewers. The recipe also offers tips for partially cooking thick bacon beforehand to avoid chewy texture and suggestions for alternative cooking methods such as grilling or air frying.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound Shrimp with tails, peeled & deveined, about 20-22, large
  • 7 lices Bacon

Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha more to taste, optional
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

  1. Line a baking pan with non-stick foil or parchment paper.
  2. Cut bacon strips into thirds and wrap each slice of bacon around each piece of shrimp. Secure with a toothpick.
  3. Combine the sauce ingredients in a small bowl and brush each shrimp with half of the sauce.
  4. Turn broiler on to high.
  5. Broil about 4 to 6-inches from the heat for 4 minutes. Flip the shrimp and brush with the remaining sauce. Broil for an additional 5 to 6 minutes or until crisp and shrimp is cooked through.

Notes

  • Use large or jumbo shrimp (16/20 per pound) for optimal texture after cooking.
  • You may prepare shrimp wrapped in bacon up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate, then cook just before serving.
  • Thin bacon strips give best crispness; if using thick bacon, partially precook to avoid toughness.
  • For added flavor, thread a piece of pineapple onto each shrimp before cooking if desired.
  • To make an entrée, thread multiple bacon-wrapped shrimp onto skewers, brush with sauce, and grill with lid closed, flipping once.
  • Wooden skewers used on the grill should be soaked in water beforehand to prevent burning.
  • Air fryer instructions: cook at 400°F for about 5 minutes, flip, then cook an additional 3-5 minutes until crisp.
