Bacon Wrapped Smokies
Description
This recipe features little smokies enveloped in pieces of salty center-cut bacon. After arranging them on a lined baking sheet, the smokies are generously coated with brown sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup. Baking melts the sugar into a bubbly glaze and crisps the bacon, resulting in a tender, flavorful bite with a balance of sweet and savory elements.
Once baked, the wrapped smokies are placed in a slow cooker on low heat with additional maple syrup to keep them warm and well-coated for serving. This slow warming method helps maintain the glaze’s stickiness and the bacon’s crisp texture.
They can be served as is or paired with sauces like honey mustard or barbecue for additional flavor. These smokies are convenient party snacks that can be kept warm until ready to enjoy.
Using center-cut bacon avoids the need for securing with toothpicks, but regular bacon requires toothpicks to hold the wrapping. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Bacon center cut
- 1 (14 ounce) package little smokies
- 1 cup brown sugar
- maple syrup to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut the bacon into halves or thirds.
- Wrap each Little Smokie with a piece of bacon. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. Place the wrapped Little Smokies on the lined baking pan.
- Sprinkle generously with brown sugar. Drizzle a little maple syrup over all the smokies once they are covered in brown sugar.
- Bake for about 40 minutes or until the sugar is bubbly and brown.
- To serve, put all the wrapped smokies in a slow cooker on low and add a little more maple syrup. Stir well so each Smokie is coated with the sugary glaze.
Notes
- If using regular bacon, secure each smokie with a toothpick to hold the bacon in place during cooking.
- The smokies can be dipped in honey mustard or barbecue sauce for added flavor variation.
- Adding cayenne pepper to the brown sugar mixture can provide a subtle spicy kick.
- Keep the smokies warm for parties by using a Crockpot on low or "warm" setting.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to four days.
