Baked Apple Slices
Description
This recipe uses a combination of Fuji and Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced, tossed with melted butter, both white and brown sugar, cinnamon, sea salt, and cornstarch. The cornstarch helps thicken the juices released during baking, creating a soft, jammy texture. Baking at 350°F for 45 minutes softens the apples and allows the sugars and cinnamon to meld into a rich syrup, which coats the slices evenly when stirred every 15 minutes.
The finished baked apple slices feature a smooth texture without fibrous peel bits, thanks to peeling beforehand. They offer a warm, sweet, and spiced flavor profile that works well not only as a dessert but also paired with chicken or fish for a sweet-savory combination.
The notes recommend peeling the apples for a smooth texture, using pineapple juice to prevent browning if prepping ahead, and stirring intermittently during baking for even caramelization. Leftovers store well refrigerated for up to four days and can be frozen for two months. Reheating gently in a covered baking dish helps maintain moisture and flavor.
