Baked BBQ Chicken Wings

Baked BBQ Chicken Wings are coated in a crisping mix of flour, cornstarch, and salt, then baked twice to develop a crunchy exterior. Tossed in a buttery barbecue and soy sauce glaze with optional sriracha, the wings finish under the broiler for a caramelized coating, combining sweet, savory, and spicy flavors in a crispy texture.

Description

This recipe starts by patting chicken wings dry and tossing them in flour, cornstarch, and salt to create a surface that crisps up during baking. Wings are placed on a wire rack over a baking sheet and baked at 425°F for 40 minutes total, flipping midway to ensure even cooking and browning.

After baking, the wings are coated in a whisked sauce blend of barbecue sauce, soy sauce, melted butter, and optional sriracha for heat. Returning to the oven under the broiler crisps and caramelizes the sauce on the wings. The resulting texture features a crispy exterior with a sticky, flavorful glaze.

The recipe allows adjustment of spice levels by varying the amount of sriracha. Using butter in the sauce adds richness and aids in crispness. These wings offer an appealing combination of textures and flavors suitable as a snack or main protein dish.

Cornstarch is key for extra crispy skin but can be omitted if unavailable. Choose your preferred barbecue sauce to tailor sweetness and smokiness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound chicken wings cut into drumettes and flats
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup barbecue sauce
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425° F
  2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil then place a wire rack on top.
  3. Pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels and place them in a large bowl.
  4. Sprinkle the wings with the flour, cornstarch, and salt and toss well to coat thoroughly.
  5. Shake off any excess flour and place the wings on the wire rack that's on the baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes
  7. Flip the chicken wings over and bake for an additional 20 minutes.
  8. Add the BBQ sauce, soy sauce, butter, and sriracha to a medium bowl and whisk together well.
  9. Add the cooked wings to the sauce and toss to coat well.
  10. Return the wings to the wire rack and place them under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until crisp and caramelized. (watch carefully so they do not burn!) flip half way if desired.

Notes

  • Cornstarch on wings helps create a crispy skin but can be left out if not on hand.
  • Use any barbecue sauce you prefer; the recipe uses honey barbecue for sweetness.
  • Butter enriches the sauce and assists in crisping the wings during broiling.
  • Adjust sriracha quantity to control heat level to taste.
