Baked Beef Tacos

Baked Beef Tacos feature ground beef sautéed with custom taco seasoning, onions, and garlic, combined with black beans, then baked in hard taco shells topped with cheddar cheese. This layered preparation produces flavorful, moist taco filling with baked crispy shells. Optional toppings add freshness and heat, allowing a balanced taco meal made efficiently in the oven.

Description

This recipe prepares a homemade taco seasoning blend with chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, oregano, cayenne pepper, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper, providing aromatic and mildly smoky heat. Ground beef is browned alongside diced onion and garlic, then mixed with the seasoning blend and black beans to incorporate texture and moisture.

The seasoned beef and bean mixture is spooned into hard taco shells arranged upright in a casserole dish to support baking. Cheddar cheese is sprinkled on top, and the tacos are baked to melt the cheese and crisp the shells slightly for texture contrast.

Optional ingredients such as chopped tomato, jalapeño, fresh cilantro, and sour cream can be added for additional flavor, heat, and creaminess, enhancing the eating experience. These baked tacos serve well as a casual main course or party dish.

When using higher-fat beef, brown it without seasoning first, then drain excess fat before adding seasoning to control grease and maintain flavor balance.

Ingredients

Servings

TACO SEASONING

  • 1 Tbsp chili powder $0.30
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika $0.10
  • 1 tsp cumin $0.10, ground
  • 1/2 tsp oregano $0.05, dried
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper $0.03
  • 1/2 tsp salt $0.02
  • black pepper $0.03, freshly cracked

TACOS

  • 1 Tbsp neutral cooking oil $0.04, generic cooking oil
  • 1 yellow onion $0.37
  • 2 cloves garlic $0.16
  • 1/2 lb. ground beef $3.90, lean 93% or higher
  • 1 oz. can black beans $0.79
  • 1 box hard taco shells $1.00, 10 shells
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese $1.20, shredded, 4 oz

OPTIONAL TOPPINGS

  • 1 tomato $0.49
  • 1 jalapeño $0.06
  • 1 handful cilantro $0.13, fresh
  • 1/4 cup sour cream $0.11

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the ingredients for the taco seasoning, then set the seasoning aside (or use one envelope of store-bought taco seasoning). Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
  2. Dice the onion and mince the garlic. Add the onion, garlic, and cooking oil to a large skillet. Sauté the onion and garlic over medium heat until the onion is soft and translucent (about 5 minutes). Add the ground beef and prepared taco seasoning and continue to sauté until the beef is cooked through (another 5 minutes).
  3. Arrange the taco shells in a casserole dish so they are all standing upright. If you do not have a dish that fits them snuggly enough to hold them up, use balled up aluminum foil to act as "book ends" to help hold the line of tacos upright.
  4. Drain the can of black beans well, but do not rinse them. A little sauciness helps keep the beef mixture moist.Stir the beans into the seasoned beef and allow them to heat through.
  5. Fill the tacos with the beef and bean mixture. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over top. Bake the tacos in the preheated oven for 7-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the taco shells are golden brown on the edges.
  6. While the tacos are baking, dice the tomato, slice the jalapeño, and roughly chop the cilantro leaves. Sprinkle the diced tomato, jalapeño, and cilantro over the tacos, and add a dollop of sour cream just before serving.

Notes

  • If using higher fat ground beef, brown without seasoning first and drain excess fat before adding taco seasoning to improve texture and flavor.
