Baked Breakfast Apples

Baked Breakfast Apples are hollowed apples filled with oats, walnuts, and raisins, soaked in milk and cinnamon to create a warm, tender morning treat. The dish balances the natural sweetness and slight tartness of baked apples with the soft, creamy texture of soaked oats and the crunch of nuts, finished with a choice of sweet garnishes. This comforting baked breakfast is useful for a cozy morning meal or a wholesome snack with customizable toppings.

Description

Baked Breakfast Apples combine fresh apples filled with a mixture of rolled oats, milk, cinnamon, chopped walnuts, and raisins. The apples are cored and filled before baking in a water bath at 350°F until tender and the grain mixture is heated through. The baked oats inside have a creamy texture, complemented by the softness of the apples and bits of crunch from the walnuts. The natural sweetness of the fruit pairs well with optional garnishes like brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, or whipped cream for added flavor. This recipe offers a gentle and warming start to the day, with leftovers possible if cooled and refrigerated.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 apple
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice (about 1/2 lemon)
  • 1 cup rolled oats old fashioned
  • 1 cup milk (any kind of milk will work)
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp walnuts chopped
  • 2 Tbsp raisins

garnish

  • brown sugar maple syrup, or honey
  • Whipped Cream yogurt, creme fraiche, or half and half

Instructions

  1. set oven to 350°F
  2. Mix the oats, milk and cinnamon in a small bowl, and set aside for an hour. You can do this the night before if you like.
  3. Slice the top 1/4 off the apples and remove the core with a paring knife and a spoon. Widen the cavity just a bit so it can accommodate the oatmeal. Brush with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  4. Mix the oatmeal with the nuts and raisins and spoon it into the apples, pushing down slightly to fill the apple completely.
  5. Set the apples in a baking dish and add about 1/2 inch hot water to the pan. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes, or until everything is hot and the apples are tender.
  6. Serve immediately with the garnishes of your choice.
