Baked Chicken Wings

Baked Chicken Wings are seasoned with a mix of olive oil, butter, garlic powder, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper, then baked until browned and crispy. They are tossed in a rich sauce made from melted butter, honey, sriracha, soy sauce, and lime juice, adding sweet, spicy, and tangy flavors. Garnishes of lime wedges brighten the dish further.

Description

This Baked Chicken Wings recipe starts by patting wings dry to achieve crisp skin during baking at 400°F. The wings are coated in a seasoned mixture of olive oil, salted butter, garlic powder, kosher salt, and black pepper, then baked in a single layer on a foil-lined and greased baking sheet. Cooking time is around 45 to 50 minutes until the wings are golden and crisp.

While baking, a sauce is prepared by melting salted butter and combining it with honey, sriracha, soy sauce (or gluten-free tamari), and freshly squeezed lime juice. This sauce provides a balance of sweetness, heat, umami, and acidity. After baking, the wings are tossed in the sauce to coat thoroughly.

These wings can be garnished with lime wedges for a fresh citrus note before serving immediately. The level of heat can be adjusted by varying the amount of sriracha used.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Wings:

  • 2 TB olive oil
  • 3 lbs chicken wings split, no tips
  • 2 TB butter salted
  • 1 TB garlic powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 3 tsp kosher salt not fine table salt

For the Sauce:

  • 5 TB butter salted
  • ½ cup honey pure
  • ¼ cup sriracha
  • 1 TB soy sauce or gluten-free tamari sauce
  • 2 tsp lime juice freshly squeezed
  • lime for garnish, wedges, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F, and place rack on the upper middle position. Line a large baking sheet with foil, and grease with cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. Using dry paper towels, pat the wings dry. This step is important to ensure crispy wings.
  3. In a bowl, combine the oil, butter, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Place the wings in the bowl, and toss to combine, coating thoroughly.
  4. Place the wings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Do not over-crowd. Bake 45-50 minutes or until they are browned and crisp.
  5. While the wings are baking, prepare the sauce. Melt the butter in a small pot over medium heat. Add the rest of the ingredients, stirring constantly until the mixture begins to bubble. Immediately remove from the heat, and set aside.
  6. Transfer the wings to a large bowl, and pour the sauce on top. Toss to coat.
  7. Garnish with lime wedges, if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of sriracha in the sauce to control spiciness according to preference.
  • Pat the wings dry before baking to ensure crisp skin.
